NSW Ports wanted to understand the productivity of the terminals of which it is landlord. DWA merged several databases of ship arrival and productivity information to achieve a cohesive set of data covering the operation of the port over a ten-year period. They then undertook a detailed analysis of the combined data set to gain a full understanding of productivity and utilization across terminals both marine and landside. This performance was benchmarked against international standards and forecasts were then made of the ability of the terminals to improve productivity. The work allowed for ship size, number of containers exchange on each call, dwell time variations etc. The work done is perhaps the most detailed analysis of productivity ever undertaken in a port.
